Demolition work concludes on the VicinayCadenasfacilities

The Contract Award Board has finished demolition work on the facilitiesVicinayCadenas had on Zorrotzaurreand which had begun at the beginning of September. This thus concludes the last great demolition operation to be performed in phase one of the Zorrotzaurreproject.

The demolition has been carried out on the VicinayCadenas installations except for the two office buildings forming part of the 19 conserved under the Special Plan to be devoted to new purposes: The former Banco de Bilbao archive and the old La Coromina paint factory. The first is earmarked to be the future headquarters of Tknika, the Research and Applied Innovation Centre for vocational training in Euskadi.

The area is thus virtually cleared (only the old Deusto rowing pavilion and the two foregoing buildings remain standing) for the uses this land is assigned for under theZorrotzaurre Special Plan.

VicinayCadenas, the world’s leading offshore chain sling manufacturer, which had transferred the production it used to carry out on Zorrotzaure to its new Sestao plant, has been an important figure in breathing new life into the district. It was the largest company inZorrotzaurre, where it owned 7.5% of the land (approximately 30,000 m2) and it was one of the founder-members of the Zorrotzaurre Management Committee which is heading the district’s regeneration process.
